Historical Overview

Bromley College of Further & Higher Education is a U.K. government funded college which has been offering courses to students at its main site for nearly 50 years.

In the mid 1980's GEC Marconi Avionics used to recruit graduates in numerate disciplines and found they required retraining before they were really useful to the company. We provided a six-month retraining course in Real-time Applications for these graduates. From this was born the HND in Engineering (Software Engineering), which was designed to produce diplomates who would be useful to industry from day 1, without requiring extensive retraining.

The HND in Engineering (Software Engineering) was replaced by the HNC/D in Computer Systems Engineering in the mid 1990's. In the late 2000's the HND in Computer Systems Engineering was itself replaced by Foundation Degrees in Network Computing and Software Development.

Foundation Degrees are relatively new vocationally focused qualifications designed specifically to meet the demand from employers for particular technical skills and associated academic knowledge and transferable skills.

The HND in Computer Systems Engineering is no longer offered for entry as it was replaced by Foundation Degrees in Network Computing and Software Development in September 2008.
