Jeff Thurman jthurman1969@gmail.comYou really have a great site. Thank you!
Chuck Soludo soludopublishing@gmail.comYour site has helped me pass the love of tap and the history of the time step to my students. When I started teaching at a new studio, I asked..."How many time steps are there?" They said ONE!! I quoted from your site...there are probably as many time steps as there are tap dancers. I also have created a time step book of the ones I was raised on and new ones I have developed or my students have created. Now my students are eager to create their own signature time step and be the next chapter in my book! I am very proud to be a part of the survival of the history of the time step!

Onic Fudger cfudger@googlemail.comI'm a music teacher. I've been teaching for 27 years. Singing is my specialty along with theatre. I haven't been able to master the time step. I had a hip replacement 4 years ago and it's alittle touchy when I put a lot of stress on the legs, feet and ankles, but I'm going to try to do what I can. This is the first site i could check out exactly what the time step is. Thanks soooooo much!

Enjoyed your site. I am currently trying to write a short book on tap as I have seen it through the eyes of a 65 year old. I first saw Bob Hope doing his unique soft shoe in a stage show and knew I had to learn this form of dance. Been teaching for the past 50 years.

dollygill@fastmail.fm smithholly21@yahoo.comQuestion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
isn't a double timestep stomp hop flap flap step stomp hop flap flap step stomp hop flap flap step stomp......?
kuz my friend says it begins with a shuffle, not a stomp and im so confused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ALSO, does this website say anywhere how to do a time step? If i missed it, im sorry, but i didn't see it anywhere
does anybody know if there is a website for other tap moves not just the time step? like buffalos, or irishes or other tap stuff?
Rita VillaFor school I had a speech to make on how to do something. Being a tap dancer, I decided to teach my classmates how to a timestep. I knew the steps by heart, but I wanted to say something about the history of the Time Step. I was going to ask my tap teacher, but then I came across this site. I was so astonished! Oh my God, a whole website for TIME STEPS?!?! Thank you so much for this, I'm giving my speech on Dec. 14th, wish me luck everybody!!!!! I bet I'll get an A! (knock on wood!)

I have only been dancin since may 2003 . our class have just finished our first dance show and have throughly enjoyed ourselves a big Thank You goes to Angela Beardmore our teacher who helped to get us there she truly is a star
Well Done girls xxxxxxxxx
I've been a dance teacher for over 30 years. Tap has always been my favorite. I find when I need to forget or feel better putting on my tap shoes help.
The children always loved to do it. It helped them in school. It's amazing what dancing can do for you. I hope all of you continue dancing. Soccer is nice, but it won't do for you what dancing does. Tap has changed....but the basics are always the same. Practice those shuffles and learn the time step as many ways as you can.
I have been tap dancing for about 7 years now and I really love it! I am planning to go to performing arts college next year to study, amongst other things, tap. I teach up to grade three and I am taking my Advanced one exam this year. I think you site is great and the variations on the time steps are wicked! I just want to make this comment in response to Megans entry dated 03.02.04:
"they are so out of count and totally wrong the time step is: Shuffle, hop, leap, brush, step step. A double is shuffle, hop, brush, leap, brush, step step, a triple is: shuffle, hop, shuffle, leap, brush step step"
I don't know what sort of time steps you get taught in Canada, but everywhere else, we spring, not leap in time steps. We also do a tap spring, not a brush on count 2 of a double shuffle time-step, and a shuffle spring on count two of a triple. So it may well help if you know what you are talking about before you start telling people who are obviously a lot better than you are, how to do things. :-)
Your site's great!

I have Been tap Dancing for About 7 years now, And I love it.
Anya Taylor aktaylor9@aol.comUhg i am 13 years old and i am a dancer of like 10 years and i was so angry when i saw you sites clips of the time steps they are so out of count and totally wrong the time step is: Shuffle, hop, leap, brush, step step. A double is shuffle, hop, brush, leap, brush, step step, a triple is: shuffle, hop, shuffle, leap, brush step step. The person doing them might of been doing that but you can't tell if he is or not its counted 8 & 1 2 & 3& 4 & 5 6 & 7 &. Your clip is out of time!!! you should load some newer verson in i would be happy to submit some clips of me doing them i can do all Time steps!!! and would be more then happy to contribute! other then that that minor deatail i loved your site!... and anyone else reading this feel free to e-mail me if you have a dance website and want pictures or clips of me dancing i can!!! e-mail me!

john jones j.t.jones@mail.co.ukShout out from Canada. Fun site - the clips are great.
Jennifer therhythmroom@telus.netGood news for anybody searching for that John Bubbles album I talked about in my last entry!
"Bubbles....John W. That Is" IS available as a foreign pressing on CD and it is available for sale through www.gemm.com.
I'm not sure if the stereo master was used in the making of the CD, or if (the late) Bob Hope's original liner notes were retained - but as I said before, once you hear Bubbles' album, I'm very sure you'll enjoy it.
When you enter GEMM's website, enter "search by label" and then "Vee Jay," or enter "search by artist' and then enter "John Bubbles." Either way, it'll direct you to the seller of Bubbles' CD as well as the selling price. (For those who collect original vinyl like myself, GEMM has some vinyl copies of Bubbles' album for sale as well.)
Sadly, Bubbles' album is STILL NOT available on CD domestically, so your best bet would be to check out GEMM's website.
If any of you tappers do get a copy of Bubbles' CD, please feel free to e-mail me and tell me what you think.
Good luck!
I love to see talent in the Alfro American past and present, people like Bill Robinson, Gregory Hines, Savion Glover and others make me feel great that I am a Black American, I take my hat off to you all.

bunnie bunnie7744@hotmail.comI have been learning to Tap for 3 year now (once a week night classses) and have my BATD bronze/silver/gold - now going for Blue Ribband. I have only just thought about looking up Tap on the Web (only had a computer at home since last May) and was so pleased to find this site!
The wonderful Nicholas Brothers clips (my Heroes) and many others. I think Tap is the best dance genre and I have never met anyone who didn't love it. Although I have met many who think they can do it just by jumping up and down-little do they know...!
I will carry on forever. Thank you for this site. I shall revist again.
Jo-a budding Tap dancer-very amateur but love it!
Great fun reading your website. I've been tapping now for the past 50 years and hope never to have to stop! Thanks for making this site available.
Debbie Redman dredman2@hotmail.comThis site is really cool i love tap i have benn dancing since i was 3 and tapping since i was 7 i am 13 now i love tap so much and this site is really cool talking about it!
Laura lozzy4eva@hotmail.comOne other item I forgot:
Was anyone aware John Bubbles made a record album in 1964?
That's right - the name of Bubbles' album was called "Bubbles....John W. That Is," and he mostly sang such old standards as "When You Wish Upon a Star," "Someone to Watch Over Me," and "There's a Boat Leaving for New York." There was even a track - "I Won't Dance," from the musical "Roberta" - where Bubbles was heard tapping as well as singing.
Unfortunately, this album has been out of print for ages - Vee Jay Records (the original home of The Beatles here in the States, as well as The Four Seasons and (the late) Betty Everett ("The Shoop Shoop Song")) shortly declared bankruptcy after Bubbles' album was released, and to my knowledge no other label has claimed reprint rights to it. (I believe here in the States Collectables Records owns Vee Jay's backlog; I'm not sure who does in the UK. I guess you'll have to ask a diehard record buff in your country.)
My only suggestion is to write a reissue label (such as Collectables); perhaps if they get enough response, the label might consider rereleasing it. In the meantime, for those like myself who are still fortunate to own a turntable, try checking out an oldies shop and you might find Bubbles' album. When you hear it, I'm sure you'll enjoy it (Bob Hope wrote the liner notes on the back cover).
Great site. I was tapping for five years from 8 to 13 and I gave it up to play football. Now I am 27 and have just started to learn again here in japan. Your site has provided me with inspiration and a lot of practice material. Thanks.
Tommy tommysbusiness@hotmail.comThank you so much for Time Step, made even better because it's a UK site. The clips of the Flash & Class Acts are absolutely fantastic, but they are far too short for me!
Now all I need to find is a site that lays out the moves (shu-ful, HOP, step, back, ball change!)
I have been tap dancing since I was 3 years old and this site was very educational. I learned things that I never learned even in my 10 years or tapping. Thanks!
Patty VictoryAngel1308@aol.comThank you for featuring Coles & Atkins. Pat is Cholly's son and Sean is his grandson. Cathy is Pat's wife. If you don't know, Cholly passed away April 19, 2003. All of our family appreciates your site. Thank you.
Cathy, Pat, Sean Sherrod cklein9999@aol.comI'm a 22 year old guy, who's just learnt to tap as I'm playing Don Lockwood in a production of Singin' in the Rain. I've never found such a great way to stay in shape, have fun, and generally fill me with a complete buzz!! I've been watching a lot of Gene Kelly's tap dances and think the guy is an absolute legend! He had such command over his dances: I was left in awe!
Does anyone know of any small Hoofer clubs still running, in and around London, where there is still dancing to a high standard, or is the art all but lost?
I will be 41 years old on April 29 and I just took up tap again after a 2-year absence. I am attending Birmingham (Michigan) Dance Academy, and we are just beginning to rehearse "Puttin' on the Ritz" for this year's recital. I even bought a new pair of Capezio shoes with Teletone II taps (What are your thoughts on these taps?).
This is a great website - after watching those video clips of your rhythm tapping, it makes me want to learn this "improvisational" technique even more. (Were you making a recording of your tapping? I noticed you were wearing headphones in those clips.)
Any chance you'll come here to the States and perform (or maybe hold a class on how to rhythm tap)?
Thanks again for this website. Keep up the good work!
I'm 78 years old and still tapping. I belong to a group of women, all around the same age and we tap up a storm. We dance out and perform aor many organizations. They love us and think it's great to see all the grey heads. Your site is overwhelming and I send hours enjoying it. Thanks!!!!!!!!!
Irene Peters tapper13@penguinponds.comThis is a great site. Thank you. I am currently working to obtain my Associate Tap Teachers qualification and was just looking for a bit of background information to astound my examiner! And I have found your site very informative. Keep it up!

cathy bauer nhrmswa@intergate.comWhat an absolutely brilliant site, could have spent all afternoon here. However, have new routines to make up. Still going at 48 and was awarded Honours recently in the most difficult advanced tap syllabus I have ever encountered. Would welcome news from other tappers in the UK for new amalgamations. Brilliant work Tony - love the clips. Love to tap to boogie woogie - brilliant rythms to work to.
Megan Hall megan.hall@btopenworld.comWhat an absolutely brilliant side, could have spent all afternoon here. However, have new routines to make up. Still going at 48 and have was awarded Honours recently in was of the most difficult advanced tap syllabus I have ever encountered. Would welcome news from other tappers in the UK for new amalgamations.
Megan Hall megan.hall@btopenworld.comHey yall! This site is honestly amazing you guys have to know that! I have been tapping for thirteen years of my life (since I was 4) and I have followed the lives of all the wicked hoofers out there (bojangles, bubbles, jimmy slyde, sandman simms etc etc). But my faves of ALL time would most definatly have to be the Saints of all tapping styles, Mr Gregory Hines and Mr Savion Glover. They have been my idols since I can remember, and I have been continuously following in their footsteps, watching all their videos and mimicking much of their moves, but incorporating them into my own style. I just wanted to say that I really appreciate all the time and hard work that was put into this awesome website and I'll be visiting it everyday so I can watch the Founding Fathers of this wicked genre we call HOOFING!!!
Kerri princess4u2nv@hotmail.comI am very glad to find Your page in internet. I have practiced tap dancing for two years in Armenia.
I am fond of this fine art and I want to be a member of Your club (to get every information about tap dancing). I`ll be happy recieve a reply from You.

I just added your web address to the "timestep handout" I am passing out tonight at a timestep workshop I am putting on. You have a really fun and informative website here!!! I have been dancing for about 43 years. I'm 46-I have a studio in WA State now and have for almost for almost 20 years. I trained in the Los Angeles area - but began dancing in Youngstown Ohio in 1958.
Thank You so much for your site! I will be back often and am in hopes my students will also visit your site often!
Keep Tappin'! Jayne
I have been doing tap with the other mum's from take 2 dance school in Kirk Sandall since last October. Just starting to get the hang of it. Found the time step video's really useful as I could not get the rhythm right! I have always wanted to do tap! It's only taken 40 years too get around to it. Would like to hear from any other tappers. I am sure I will visit this site again. Thanks to all for putting the site together. Denise.

Tapper in Texascool
gennaI'm a huge fan of tap, i dance myself, i do ballet, tap and stage- this website site is very good, but for people who have no schools to teach them, you should show basic steps- e.g- shuffle-hop-downs, single timesteps(slowly) with a break(shuffle hop down, shuffle down shuffle ball change, shuffles, prep. pick ups(brush backs) and maybe two leg and one leg pick ups. The site is Very good for people who do know about tap, BUT not for those who don't
Nicola, AGE 12, grade 4 tap- higher divsion
I found this site to be very interesting. I enjoyed all the entries on the many famous fathers of tap. It is truly an art form that sometimes is overlooked. Tap dancing is amazing across the board of dance. It is truly the greatest. This site is Simply Taplicious!!!
It's a gerat site. I am in Shanghai, China and very love the tap dance, even fan of it. But there is no school to teach the dance. I do hope you could provide the video of basic steps and then I, a foreigners, could learn it.
Jinyue Li lijinyue@online.sh.cnI have been tap dancing for four years now and I love it, I dance with m.i.d.a. and have done my medals through them. I am taking my grade 3 exam in two weeks time and I have found your site helpful for this.
keep up the good work
The time step sites are really good, so I could use the given information for my next presentation. Thanks a lot. Does anyone know some good tapdance-music, -musicians?

I've only been learning for 3 months, and I've started a bit late - I'm 47 years old, but I think (hope) you're never too late to learn. I've always danced (ballet, ballroom) but never tap before. Only problem is it takes me a bit longer to memorise the steps - brain not always connected to feet, but who cares, I love it. Thanks for the excellent site.
Sonia sbwillow@hotmail.comThis site is just what I have been looking for, lots of info.
My 3 daughters dance, and I started tapdancing in November 1994 in the ladies tap class - now I am due to take the Intermediate tap exam with B.T.D.A. and also help with teaching. Keep up the good work Tony.

Sabine (15) klaproosje4@dolfijn.nlI am an elementary music teacher and my older students will get to see a live performance of tap dancing in two weeks. I am VERY grateful for the "Time Step" website, because now I feel more informed to explain the true history of tap dancing to my students as we know it!! Thanks SO much for the research you have put into this fabulous part of our musical history!!
Doray Walker DorayMommy@aol.comI have been tap dancing for five years. I took it up because of my two daughters. We are choreoraphing a tap number for the three of us and are going to perform on stage with their dance studio. Tap dancing is so much fun and great exercise too.

Someone get Gregory Hines to make a tap dance instruction video. This is so obvious I can't believe it. I've been tapping for 2 years. I love it. Also, how about some Shirley Temple dance clips.
Gayle em1033@aol.comWhere are the tapping women on this site? Where is Jeni LeGon for example - she wasthe first
female black tapper to make it in Hollywood - that is a big achievement

Me I Love Tap!!! I have been tappingfrom 2nd to 9th grade for 6 years going on 7!It isn't a hobby anymore it is a dream! Tap is so amazing and historical how it goes way back to slavery. BUT sometimes the way people use it like back in the 20's or some yearit was bad some of the whites (not trying to say a specific race) performed puitting on black makeupleaving their lips white and making fun of blacks. but now that history has changed and tap spread around the world and people have adapted it and made their own thing from tap. Me being in tap I learned a lot. You all who made this website did a good job keep it up and you will get more letters from me!

Tanya Twoleftft2@aol.omThis is my first visit and it has prove enlightening. I help a small number of students (from 5-45) to learn tap, but just for fun. I am interested in learning more and would welcome any advice or tip in teaching all forms of time steps. I have children with learning problems, and one is deaf.
Louise wulise@ntlworld.comI hate when people say they know the "time step." There's lots of times steps: Buffalo, New York, singles, double, triples...

Cynthia cjhbeh@msn.comYou have a wonderful site. I'm a new tap dancer and I need all the help I can get. How about some personal lessons for the world's greatest...YOU
Cynthia cjhbeh@msn.comI love the videos. I have danced for 14 years and I am only 17 years old! I remeber my old dance school that I used to take dance from went to New York one year and we danced with profesional dancers including Gregory Hines and Savion Glover. I still talk about that. I was only in the second grade and they made me want to work harder to be more like them. We have to do a project to graduate from High School and I am doing mine on Tap dancing! This has been a major help. In this project we have to write a paper and give a presentation. In the paper we have to have interviews. Maybe I could interview any of you for my paper. That would be a huge help. Please get back with me as soon as posible.
Thanks,
Bridgette
